TAHIRAH, 22 year old Security Admin from Sydney, was crowned the NRE Miss India Australia 2005 at a glittering pageant held at the Science Theater, UNSW Kensington on Saturday, October 22, 2005. TRISHNA, 18 year old student from Perth was adjudged as the NRE MIA Runner-Up 2005. Tahirah has earned the honour of representing Australia in the Miss India Worldwide 2005 to be held in Mumbai later in January 28, 2006. The three hours and thirty minutes glittering pageant featured four rounds - traditional Indian dress, evening gown, talent performance and question & answer round. The Pageant introduced the twelve contenders for the title in a Indian Dress round on stage which was followed by the evening gown round. Following the elimination process eight of the contestants were called on stage for the talent performance round. The talent performance determined the final five contenders for the coveted title of NRE Miss India Australia 2005. The performance highlights included dance performance for the Bollywood songs from the movies Gupt, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam etc., Bhangra dance and vocal performance. For the final Question and Answer round each of the final five were given the chance to pick a judge randomly and answer the question asked by the judge. Judges for the event included the well-known television and Bollywood celebrity Shweta Kawaatra of Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki fame, world class industrialist Arun Kumar Jagatramka, Managing director of Indian multinational Gujarat NRE Coke Ltd. from India. The renowned SBS radio presenter and producer Kumud Merani from Sydney, Executive beauty Editor of 3 Australian magazines (Living, Australian Good taste and Australian Country Style), Juliet Richardson from Sydney and well known Indian classical dancer and choreographer Gowri Nagaranjan from Melbourne completed the panel of five judges for the third Miss India Australia pageant. This years Miss India Australia pageant saw contestants from all over Australia with Sydney contributing five contestants out of the 12 finalists, three from Melbourne, one from Canberra and three finalists from Perth. The NRE Miss India Australia 2005 winner Tahirah also won the title of Miss India Australia Cyberqueen 2005 for attracting the maximum number of votes on the Internet. The other sub-title winner of the event were Trishna from Perth who along with the title of MIA Runner-up 2005 was also adjudged MIA Photogenic and Roxanne from Melbourne won the title MIA Beautiful Smile. The event also included Indian Australian fusion performances. Highlights were a dance performance – inspired by Yoga performed by Australian dancers on Indian music. Other performances included a fusion of Bollywood & hip hop dancing – a tribute to Helen’s old Bollywood songs, Brazilian and Indian dance fusion on “Jalwa” and a vocal performance by Sabrina Houssami, Miss World NSW 2005. Special Guest Legendary cricketer Michael Holding was present in the audience and gracefully accepted to come up to the stage to have a chat with Sudish Nayyar the M.C. Vimala Raman – Miss India Australia 2004 flown in all the way from Chennai shared her moment on the stage and was delighted to provide her experience and highlights of the last one year as the Miss India Australia 2004. Vimala has been shooting in Austria just prior to the event in Sydney for her upcoming film “Poi” by K Balachander. In the last one year she has also hosted dance shows on television and appeared in few advertisements endorsing a host of products. |
